What are some entry level opportunities in the field of international law for young lawyers?

"As a young lawyer, I have benefited enormously from placement opportunities at international courts and organizations, many accessible through law schools and international law societies that provide dedicated funding. I am currently a Visiting Lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and have completed fellowships at an international criminal tribunal in The Hague and a human rights NGO in Kosovo.

It helps to look at the career trajectories of international lawyers you admire and trace how they built their early experience. Summer internships are a natural starting point; international tribunals, organizations, and human rights NGOs are often welcoming to interns. From there, visiting professional placements offer greater responsibility and deeper institutional exposure.

You often hear that there is no single route. Many international lawyers I have encountered got there by first becoming strong constitutional lawyers, criminal lawyers, or litigators. The foundation matters as much as the destination."
